Whether you’re healing from birth trauma, relationship wounds, attachment disruptions, anxiety, or past painful memories, our trauma-informed clinicians will walk with you through a safe, structured healing process.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy that helps your brain process and resolve distressing memories using bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or tapping.

It works by:

  • Activating how the brain naturally processes information

  • Reducing the emotional intensity of difficult memories

  • Allowing you to move forward without feeling stuck

Instead of talking through a memory repeatedly, EMDR helps your nervous system reprocess the memory so it no longer holds the same emotional charge. This can lead to:

  • reduced anxiety or panic

  • decreased emotional triggers

  • calmer responses to stress

  • improved self-confidence and clarity

  • greater emotional balance and resilience

EMDR is widely recognized for its effectiveness in treating trauma and PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and is supported by research and leading organizations in mental health.

Does this feel like you?

EMDR therapy may be a good fit if you:

  • Feel stuck in past experiences that still affect you

  • Get triggered by memories, even when you try to move on

  • Experience anxiety, panic, or emotional overwhelm

  • Have intrusive thoughts or vivid memories

  • Feel disconnected, numb, or on edge

  • Notice patterns that seem rooted in past experiences

EMDR is not just for “big trauma.” Even seemingly small yet painful experiences that continue to influence your emotions, beliefs, or behavior can be effectively addressed.

How EMDR Works at The Bloomhouse

EMDR follows a structured process that includes eight phases:

History and Treatment Planning

You and your therapist will explore your goals for EMDR and identify what memories you would like to target with EMDR in order to achieve your goals.

1

Preparation

You will work with your therapist to build a sense of safety and learn coping tools in order to tolerate and cope with reprocessing difficult memories.

2

Assessment

The client identifies the target memory and the negative beliefs that are attached to it, along with body sensations and emotions. We use a rating scale called the Subjective Units of Distress (SUD) to get a baseline rating of how emotionally charged the memory is at the outset of EMDR.

3

Desensitization

Through guided bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or hand buzzers), we help your nervous system safely reprocess distressing memories so they lose their emotional intensity.

4

Installation

You learn to incorporate new, balanced beliefs and reactions that support your healing and replace the previously associated negative beliefs.

5

Body Scan

You assess how the targeted memory feels in your body as you hold it with the new positive belief and use BLS to process any remaining body tension.

6

Closure

Your therapist helps you return to a grounded, calm state, even if we are not complete done processing the target memory.

7

Reevaluation

The next time you come in, your therapist will assess how the previous session’s processing has held up and decide where to begin for that session.

8

Your therapist will always work with you at a pace that feels safe and comfortable for your nervous system.
